Donyale Werle spent over 20 years as a scenic designer on Broadway, Off-Broadway and regionally. Her 2012 production of Peter and the Starcatcher earned a Tony Award for Best Set Design. On Broadway she established herself as a leading voice in sustainable design practices for live events and went on to teach and speak globally on sustainable design.
Today that sensibility shapes her work in landscape design, interior plantscaping and living sculptural installations. Each design incorporates intriguing style, natural maximalism and horticultural expertise. Donyale loves the line between order and chaos and finds a way to tease that out in each design. Often using found objects, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and foraged bits. She layers plants, architecture, objects and nature's detritus into compelling visual stories for residential and commercial projects.
In 2024 she opened WildingCat Farm in Andes, NY which seasonally grows the flowers and botanical ingredients used in her design work. The farm is the root system of the studio. Understanding all aspects of a plant's life is the ecological foundation that guides every project.
